Quality cancer care should be within everyone's reach

In 1968, Dr. Thomas Troeger had a vision. His goal was to make quality cancer care accessible to everyone in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. Shortly thereafter, he was joined by other dedicated oncologists who shared his vision: Drs. Juan Garcia, Rafat Ansari and David Taber. Their collective efforts resulted in what is now Michiana Hematology Oncology, P.C.

In the last 40 years, we have grown from a modest practice housed in a small office on South Bend's Colfax Avenue to become one of the midwest's most respected cancer care providers of medical oncology, gynecologic oncology, hematology and radiation oncology services. Our experienced staff consists of eight medical oncologists, two gynecologic oncologists, five radiation oncologists and seven advanced practice nurses. More important than the size of our practice, however, has been our sustained dedication to realizing the dreams of our founders. With six offices strategically located throughout the region, we believe we have made significant progress in providing access to quality cancer care for everyone in this large community we serve. While we are proud of these accomplishments, the task is not complete. We are continuing to expand our services and our ability to serve our patients and caregivers throughout the region with the most advanced tools and tactics available to treat and defeat cancer.

A team approach to tackling clinical research

Michiana Hematology Oncology was founded on the belief that the knowledge provided through clinical trials and research was invaluable to the prevention, control and treatment of cancer for its patients. In 2000, recognizing the additional value and efficiency of shared information, Michiana Hematology Oncology was instrumental in forming the Northern Indiana Cancer Research Consortium (NICRC). Six regional hospital systems participate in the Consortium including Elkhart General Hospital, Howard Regional Health System (Kokomo), LaPorte Regional Health System, Memorial Hospital & Health System (South Bend), Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (South Bend & Plymouth) and Lakeland Regional Health System (St. Joseph & Niles, Michigan). The primary mission of the NICRC is to assure cancer patients have access to the cutting edge clinical trials. Michiana Hematology Oncology is a major participant in the program currently enrolling more than 500 patients annually in these critical research studies.
