LaPorte County Site Part of Expansion

South Bend, Indiana (August 1, 2009) — Michiana Hematology Oncology, P.C., announced today that La Porte County has been chosen as the site for an innovative new cancer-care center as part of their major expansion of services across the region. “We are pleased and excited to bring these state-of-the-art cancer care services and treatments to the citizens of LaPorte and surrounding communities,” commented Rafat Ansari, M.D., F.A.C.P., President of Michiana Hematology Oncology. “This new facility will be one of the most visible signs of our expansion across northern Indiana, southwestern Michigan. We are also bringing new physicians and highly trained cancer-care specialists, innovative new practices and treatments and even more emphasis on national clinical trials to the entire region.”

The location for the 23,000 square foot, single-story comprehensive cancer-care center will be on U.S. 421, near Purdue University’s North-Central campus. The center will offer a significant expansion of cancer-care services and will complement five other Michiana Hematology Oncology cancer-care centers throughout the region.

Site preparation for the new oncology complex, scheduled to open in 2010, will begin immediately. A ceremonial ground breaking will take place at the location sometime late summer or early fall 2009.

The new La Porte complex represents a dramatic improvement in coordination of cancer care services because everything will be housed under one roof. It will improve coordination between the regional medical community while dramatically reducing the amount of time and energy that cancer patients and their families currently devote to traveling back-and-forth between locations for screenings, consultations, treatments and the collection of personal medical records.

The Cancer Center will offer every major oncology service, including physician consultation, patient and family education, chemotherapy, infusion therapy, and radiation therapy, as well as gynecologic oncology services. The new complex will also include a full service laboratory and the most advanced diagnostic radiology services, including PET and CT scans. The onsite services represent a new partnership between Michiana Hematology Oncology and La Porte Regional Health System.

“We’ve had a long-standing professional relationship with La Porte Regional Health System,” added Ansari, “And now, we look forward to this new partnership where, with their help, we can bring everything together under one roof for the patient’s benefit.”

Michiana Hematology Oncology is also building new cancer care centers at Memorial Hospital of South Bend and on Douglas Road in Mishawaka, Indiana near the new Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Michiana Hematology Oncology, P.C., established in 1968, is the region’s largest oncology group providing medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology, and adult hematology services through six regional offices in north-central Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan.
